The link between asbestos and lung cancer has become common knowledge by a majority of U.S. citizens. However, links between asbestos and other cancers have long been suspected by medical professionals. New medical research has found a causal connection between asbestos exposure and ovarian cancer. A working group at the International Agency for Research on Cancer concluded that there is a causal link between asbestos exposure and ovarian cancer, which is consistent with a study from the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Based on these studies, as well as other medical research, many scientists now believe that asbestos exposure not only causes lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis, but it also can cause and/or contribute to ovarian cancer.
Earlier studies failed to prove a link between asbestos exposure and ovarian cancer because of the difficulty in differentiating between peritoneal mesothelioma and ovarian cancer. However, these new studies showed that women exposed to asbestos were about one-and-three-quarter times more likely to develop ovarian cancer compared to women who were not exposed. Researchers and scientists throughout the world continue to investigate the links between asbestos exposure and cancers, including ovarian cancer.
