The FRA recently announced that it is dramatically increasing the number of safety inspectors who monitor railroad bridges. The FRA is planning to train an additional 160 professionals in identifying critical defects in railroad bridge safety.

The FRA has Bridge Safety Standards that apply to the nearly 70,000 railroad bridges throughout the continental United States.
The increase will be part of the State Safety Participation Program, which is a collaborative safety program between the federal government and multiple states. The FRA provides training to state inspectors, which then allows the states to properly evaluate railroad safety issues to the federal standard.

Bridge safety is an important topic for the public, but even more so for the railroad workers who cross and work along these bridges every day as part of their work. Having additional individuals trained in identifying hazards should reduce potential injuries from dangerous bridge conditions.

Railroad workers face many hazards during their work, and the proactive inspections of bridges will help protect the workers as well as the general public.
