There have been more than 3,000 on-duty railroad worker injuries each year for the past three years, according to the FRA. These injuries range from sprains and strains to broken bones to amputations and death. In the last three years, according to the FRA data linked above, there have been:
- 452 arm/hand fractures;
- 45 arm/hand amputations;
- 322 leg/foot fractures;
- 16 leg/foot amputations;
- 34 fatalities;
- Many other recorded injuries.
The states where the most railroad workers have suffered an on-duty injury in the last three years are:
- New York, with 550 in 2020, 617 in 2021, and 675 in 2022;
- New Jersey, with 234 in 2020, 264 in 2021, and 283 in 2022;
- Illinois, with 214 in 2020, 234 in 2021, and 234 in 2022;
- Pennsylvania, with 206 in 2020, 220 in 2021 and 211 in 2022;
- California, with 165 in 2020, 197 in 2021, and 188 in 2022; and
- Texas, with 149 in 2020, 163 in 2021, and 216 in 2022.
2023’s data is still coming in as the year is not yet complete, but it would appear that the trend in these areas of injury is continuing.
